Gaining muscle and getting out of back pain

Ken's Success Story

Ken Lien, MD

I had the fortune of working out with Andy twice a week for just a little more than one year at Equinox in Northern California. I'm currently 45, and have been a fitness enthusiast for most of my life. Growing up, I would always flip the pages of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding. I participated in sports in high school, and recreationally, in college and medical school. My lifestyle became sedentary once my career started as a physician. Enthusiasm for working out in the gym during the week basically petered out, and I evolved into a weekend warrior. I still participated in a basketball league on weekends, and would spend the whole week recovering from back pain or a hamstring pull. I was overweight, and had little motivation to go back into the gym on my own.

I met Andy through an introductory training session, and immediately became hooked. Andy has a unique perspective on fitness, and really understands body mechanics and movement. Prior to Andy, I was terrified to try deadlifting. Not only is Andy highly technical, he is extremely patient and helped me understand body positioning and the mechanics of the deadlift. Deadlifting has now become one of my favorite exercises.

Aside from powerlifting, Andy has a passion for and expertise with the kettlebell. I now finish my workouts with a variation of kettlebell swings, snatches, cleans, presses, and loaded carries. During my one year of training with Andy, I saw significant gains in my overall strength, and extreme satisfaction with how I feel. I ran my first marathon during this year of training, and I owe it to Andy for helping me with my strength training. Most importantly, my mindset changed, as I have found my passion again for working out.
Andy's the best.
